Casino Marino (Dublin) - 2020 All You Need to Know BEFORE ...

AMA The Curator of Paradise Lost Ask Me Anything

Hello, my name is Rose Anne White.
I recently curated an exhibition in Dublin on the lost landscape of Marino, a suburb in Dublin 3 near Clontarf and Fairview. This landscape is now almost invisible, but was hugely influential and important in the 18th century because of its design influences, the technology it employed, and because of the man behind it - the politically-active First Earl of Charlemont. You can read more about the exhibition at www.paradiselostexhibition.com, and it is open to visit until 31 October at the Casino Marino in Dublin 3.
In a previous life (and sometime again soon if I find the time!) I ran the Irish Historical Textiles blog (http://irishhistoricaltextiles.com/blog/), as I have a great interest in textile history.
My current job is working on war memorials and graveyards from the 1913-1922 period in Dublin - I am putting together a commemorative website for the Decade of Centenaries.
Ask me anything!

ForgottenVision - Sign Ups Open!

What is ForgottenVision?
ForgottenVision is the Andra Chansen for Eurovision - a second chance for real entries form Eurovision, entries that weren't winners or haven't exactly become classics. Buit we all have those personal favorites we're fond of, and just maybe, they'll do better on a second go?
So, in ForgottenVision, everyone enters a contest that fits the above description, see exact criteria a few paragraphs later.
Well yeah lol, i just said early October. After some intense shady back room negotiations, it was decided to open ForgottenVision as soon as possible. I know, this is very sudden, but few people usually know in advance when a contest opens anyway, so i don't think it makes that much of a difference.
Now, this leaves us with the polls from this post. And we run into a problem - two polls, the questions of multiple entries from a single country and the time period, they ended dead even.
So, what do we do? I have to decide something, so, to keep it easy, but open: no entries from the Top 5 of each year (that poll was decisive), only one entry per country (should keep it simple enough), and NO YEAR RESTRICTION, as long as we're pre-2015. An entry needed a chance to become forgotten in the first place, after all. We can switch it up next year, depending on your feedback
So, what entries are eligible? An entry has to be
Roadmap:
This roadmap is only preliminary, as long as no semis become necessary.
Are former countries or contestants eligible? Yes, you can pick Yugoslavia (or Morocco, or Luxembourg) if you so desire.
So, without much further ado, i, u/Serupael, on behalf of SRF and RSI Television, am very pleased to announce and open the first edition of ForgottenVision, the Eurovision Andra Chansen for entries that just didn't make it. And what better place to stage the contest than the Teatro Kursall in the Casino of beautful Lugano, Switzerland! See and hear you soon! Unfortunately, we will not have the honor to hear Lys Assia singing her iconic "Refrain" once more...
So, i invite everyone to participate in a contest to give deserved credit to Eurovision entries that unfortunately go overlooked today! Who is your unknown favourite?

What does a rebuild look like? (Overly High Effort Post)

So I’ve been thinking about this a lot since the end of the season, and after we heard a bunch of the talk from the Yohe/Rossi/Madden hot take crowd about the supposed fact that this team is fundamentally flawed, has something wrong with the room, needs to be completely rebuilt, etc. “I know what’s coming this summer” horseshit aside, it’s really been bugging me to think about what these people really expect a rebuild to look like. So, since it’s the offseason and there’s nothing else to do, I figured I’d put on my amateur talent scout/horrible GM prediction skills and analyze what, exactly, the Pens could do, and what they’re likely to do in the offseason. Keep in mind that I’m literally nobody and have no inside information beyond what’s public and I have no credentials on this front either, but I’m also completely an expert and fuck you if you disagree with any of my opinions. I’ll break this down into tiers from most likely to be with the team next season to the UFAs who are almost certainly gone.
Tier One: The Stars
Sid – Goes without saying… right? I mean, maybe not – maybe you blame Sid for the lack of leadership on the team, or you think he’s contributing to an environment that is no longer conducive to winning. But, does anyone really believe that? Plus, and this is actually more important than that kind of tripe that nobody truly believes – can you even begin to think of a trade that would be for equal value to what Sid is worth to this franchise? That last reason is the biggest reason why none of this tier should – or will – be traded: you can’t possibly get equal value back to what they’re worth. Either the team trading for them would be foolish to do it (they’re still young enough that they’re not on their farewell tours, but they’re old enough that you’d have to be in win-now mode, and none of those teams who would fall under that category are going to give up the kind of assets it would take to make an even trade).
Geno – Geno started Game One like a wrecking ball and I was convinced that his line would end up being the turning point in that series. Boy was I right – but also wrong. Instead of dominating the Habs’ lack of depth, they looked listless at times and like they just never got back in sync. That’s led to the yearly talk about trading Geno and Letang, but frankly, JR has already committed to both and you’d never get equal value for Geno. He’s worth too much to the franchise and probably will retire a Penguin unless he leaves as a UFA.
Letang – GMJR has already committed to him so he’s not being traded in all likelihood, and there’s really no trade package that would bring back equal value for what he’s worth to the team. He plays 25 minutes a night, and even though he makes infuriating turnovers at times, they’re usually because he’s trying to be creative and doing something physically gifted that we, as fans, take for granted – even when he fails at it. Do yourself a favor and watch the tape – when there’s a breakout pass out of the defensive zone, watch when Letang fires the pass and then watch when Jack Johnson or even Marcus Pettersson throws the pass and see the difference. Letang makes this offense tick, even when that offense sucks and doesn’t put up any goals against a trash tier team like Montreal. He’s not going anywhere, like his hair or not.
Tier Two: Not Quite Stars, but basically untouchable
John Marino – I’ll eat… something if they trade Marino.
Jake Guentzel – I struggled a bit trying to figure out where to put Jake on this list. The thing is, like it or not, he was Not Good in that series against Montreal. Still, give him a pass because he was coming off of a long term injury that I’ve had and can personally attest to the fact it sucks and takes a while to recover from.
Tristan Jarry – I mean, I’d say he’s PROBABLY in this tier, but who knows; maybe GMJR gets a sick trade package for him and keeps Murray instead. I find that REALLY hard to believe, so I’m keeping him here, but I’d allow for the possibility.
Tier Three: We literally just signed these guys, so why the hell would you trade them?
Brandon Tanev – So his contract still seems a little too long and for a little too much money, but after watching him basically be the only dude on the ice skating hard for long periods of that Montreal series, I can’t imagine trading him even if you could. There’s probably a market for him somewhere if you want to retain salary, but that would be taking a big L on someone who arguably does help the team, so I don’t see it happening.
Jason Zucker – So, Zucker wasn’t nearly the impact player we were hoping to get after he scored a billion goals with Sid after acquiring him, but then again, who was? He’s with the team fairly long term, and while his acquisition price is a sunk cost, it still seems stupid as hell to trade him away at this point. He’s a useful top six forward, even if he’s not a top liner.
Tier Four: Entry Level Contracts/Very Inexpensive Contracts That Make Little Sense to Move
Dominik Simon – Simon is a possession demon, and even if his hands seem like they’re as bad as mine playing beer league sometimes, he’s a valuable part of the team and he costs 750k. I can’t see him getting traded.
Sam Lafferty – He’s still on his ELC and even though he was shit in the one game he got in the playoffs, the coaching staff and JR think highly enough of him to at least try to play him in a playoff game. I doubt he’s going anywhere.
Teddy Blueger – He’s a useful defensive forward making very little money. If you don’t end up needing him for your roster, you probably lose him on waivers, but I doubt trading him is terribly likely. He’s probably still in the bottom six next season.
Chad Ruhwedel – He makes pocket change and seems to be fairly useful #8 defenseman. He’s cleared waivers in the past and probably would in the future again.
Tier Five: I wouldn’t trade them, but GMJR might if he loses a bunch of money at Rivers Casino and wants to shake shit up
Brian Dumoulin – I’m prefacing this with the fact that I really like Dumoulin, and I do value advanced and/or fancy stats so I know he’s not the problem. But, he’s not nearly as untouchable as any of the guys above, and he’s someone with a tradeable contract who could probably fetch some assets back in return. I know absolutely nothing about the locker room culture and I don’t pretend to know anything about it, but if Dumoulin is anything but a model citizen in the room, I could see him getting moved. Still, I wouldn’t do it.
Bryan Rust – Rust seems to be a pretty standard GMJR whipping boy, and I don’t understand it at all. His advanced metrics are pretty amazing and he added the goal scoring touch this year to round out his overall game. If he’s on almost any other team, he’s probably one of their focal point stars but he gets buried a bit here given how talented the lineup is. Still, would anybody be surprised if GMJR goes on a bender and decides to move him?
Tier Six: Trade Possibilities, but what’s the point?
Marcus Pettersson – I know what you’re thinking here – he wasn’t the problem, and I agree. But, he has rather middling advanced metrics, and if I’m being honest, I am not excited to start paying him 4 million next season. Still, of this tier, he’s the least likely to go because… we’re paying him 4 million next year. But he’s very, very far from untouchable and nor should he be untouchable. His pairing was largely buoyed by stellar play from Marino and I’m not sure he’d have been remarkable at all without being tethered to that rocket. Still, with the contract… probably not going anywhere.
Zach Aston-Reese – ZAR was at fault for some pretty bad goals against during the Montreal series, and of that buzzsaw fourth line, he’s probably the most tradeable and replaceable. You could likely get value for him, since he’s only making $1m for another year. I probably would keep him, though.
Jared McCann – He’s probably going to be at least tendered as an RFA because he’s too valuable to let walk without getting anything in return, but the fact that he was the first guy on the bench when things started to go south doesn’t bode well for him – neither does the fact that he was on the single worst line during that shit show of a series. For a while, he looked like one of the future stars of the team as he was riding with Sid, but when he’s been separated from the gravy train, he hasn’t been as productive or looked nearly as irreplaceable. Could you get some value out of him by moving him? Maybe. Maybe not.
Tier Seven: Please God someone take these guys
Nick Bjugstad – He’s not totally useless, but he’s on a horrible contract that’s already gotten him traded once and he’s currently injured. I think it’s fairly unlikely the Pens will be able to move him unless they retain salary, which… sigh. I guess if you have to. At least he’s only got one more year left on his contract. Speaking of which…
Jack Johnson – 3 more years at $3.25m. If you can trade him, you do it. But you probably have to retain salary and you probably have to package something with him to offload him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s still a Penguin next season for that reason.
Tier Eight: More Likely Trade Candidates
Patrick Hornqvist – Horny has had a great career with the Pens, is by all accounts a great locker room dude and a good powerplay guy, and is completely useless at fives. I think you could get some value from trading him to a team who’s in GMJR’s Tom Wilson Fever Dreams Mode (NEED MORE GRIT). I wouldn’t be happy to see him go at all based on what he’s provided over the years, but I would understand and I actually do think it’s time.
Matt Murray – A lot of blame has always been heaped on Murray because he’s the guy who took over for the guy a lot of us liked. I personally don’t buy the exorbitant contract demands talk, but who knows. The bottom line, though, is that his metrics have been suffering for a few seasons now and for better or worse, it doesn’t make much sense to keep both goaltenders and he doesn’t save enough of the highest danger shots. Should he have to? No. But he isn’t really stealing games for us at this point and Jarry sometimes does. There are enough horrible goalie situations in the league that you should be able to trade him somewhere, but I wouldn’t expect to extract a ton of value out of the trade. Hopefully I’ll be pleasantly surprised, though.
Tier Nine: RFA Non-Tender Candidates
Evan Rodrigues – He didn’t really flash when he got a chance, even if that wasn’t much of a chance. He’d be cheap to keep in all likelihood but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him non-tendered.
Jusso Riikola – I kinda doubt you can find much better than him at that price point and I can’t imagine him fetching more than league minimum to be honest. Still, it’s possible GMJR has had enough of the Riikola experiment and is ready to move on. I’d probably keep him, for what it’s worth, but the staff started Jack Johnson over him for four games in the playoffs. Clearly they don’t think terribly highly of him.
Tier Ten: UFA’s
Justin Schultz – And now… starting for your Washington Capitals… Seriously though, JR threw him solidly under the bus and I can’t see him sticking around. And also seriously, I bet he signs with the Caps.
Conor Sheary – They literally just traded for him again, which shows they think he has some value, so it’s possible they throw him a reasonable contract offer. It’s even possible that he decides to stick around. Let me be clear: I actually really liked his game in the playoff series and I say that unironically. He was buzzing a lot, made some creative passes, and was in the right spot pretty often. Still, they lost, and he didn’t score, so he’s an obvious candidate to move on from.
Patrick Marleau – Press F to pay respects.
Conclusions:
So, what’s left? What does a real “rebuild” look like for this team that’s already fairly tight to the cap? Let’s say they move on from everyone I listed in tiers 8-10… your starting lineup looks like this (I have no idea what wings people play so I’m making this up and I fully admit that – this is just an exercise to show you that not much changes, spoiler alert):
Guentzel – Sid – Simon
Zucker – Geno – Rust
X – McCann – X
Tanev – Blueger – ZAR
Letang – Dumo
Marino – Pettersson
Johnson – X
Jarry
X
Extras: Bjugstad, Lafferty, Ruhwedel
Cue “Is This Rebuilding?” meme – even if we started dipping into the less-likely-to-be-traded tiers, this roster really doesn’t feel like it’s being changed much, unless GMJR panics and decides to turn this into Grit City™ again. My prediction is that we don’t see a lot of turnover this season – maybe a few trades here and there, but this roster is mostly the same on opening night in December or January or whenever.
What do you guys think?

[DIPLOMACY] Opening our Arms to the World

February 1st, 2024
National Council of Monaco, Quartier Du Port

The nation of Monaco has decided in a council meeting, to expand our relations with other countries, inside and outside of our sphere. Widely known as a "billionaires playground", the place where "Le Grande Prix" is held, casino-land, and to be just another rich European microstate like Liechtenstein, San Marino and Andorra . While it is true that keeping relationships with our fellow city-states is a good idea, we wish to expand upon these ideals and make our nation more influential. Our role in international affairs has been minimal over time, as we are considered to be heavily influenced by France. However we are hoping to change this.

Firstly we will begin in the United States. In order to The reigning Prince of Monaco, Albert II's mother was Grace Kelly, an influential American celebrity who is still widely loved in our country today. In honour of Grace and of the great influence our country has had from the United States. We wish to relocate our Embassy to somewhere preferably inside the Dupont Circle District and to erect a statue of Kelly in her honour in front of the building, showing the Great Relations our two nations have shared.
Secondly, in order to lessen French influence in the country, more places where citizens can live will be constructed, especially in Fontville one of the most civilian populated areas. The buildings that will be constructed here will have to be in the traditional style Monégasque architecture to preserve culture. In larger news, Monaco wishes to create a free-trade agreement with the other micronations of Europe such as Malta, with the inclusion of some outsiders like Bahrain and Singapore. Most countries smaller than Singapore would be able to join however after review.
Thirdly, we wish to expand relations with Italy, Spain and The UK along with the other nations in La Francophonie, especially countries like Canada and Tunisia. Italy, Spain and The UK provide most funds to Monaco outside of France and expanding relations with these countries even further would help tourism skyrocket and perhaps create more residents in the country. The UK and Spain bicker over Gibraltar meanialy, and it's clear that outside intervention is needed. For obvious reasons, fraternizing with other French-Speaking Nations is easier because of the lack of language barrier, however many of the Nations included in the Francophonie are very poor and would probably require some aid. (Something the Council is Still Debating)
Lastly, expanding relations with the Vatican is still immensely important to the nation because of our overwhelmingly Roman Catholic population, which still thrives despite declining in other European Nations. As the two smallest countries in the world Monaco and the Vatican are uniquely tied to one another in size , religion and natural and human beauty, and expanding relations with his Holiness, Pope Francis would be an amazing opportunity for both the government and the Monégasque people

Despite Overwhelming Evidence that Mobile Sports Betting is the Future, States Continue to Pass Legislation Without Option

19 states have passed sports betting legislation (14 are live). By the end of 2020, Jake Williams, VP of Legal and Regulatory Affairs, Sportradar U.S. (the leading data supplier in the domestic betting market), expects that figure to climb into “the mid-twenties.” Surprisingly, at least to those who are aware that +/- 80% of all sports betting takes place on mobile devices, only +/- 68% of the states that have passed legislation to date included online or mobile wagering in the bill. Those who failed to do so are leaving revenues on the table.
Howie Long-Short: One reason that such a large percentage of states are passing legislation without an online or mobile component is in the U.S. “gaming [licenses] are tied to physical locations." The overwhelming desire to “bring people into those facilities” has resulted in several states deciding they would only permit sportsbooks within brick and mortar properties.
“The industry has quickly learned [a casino] isn’t going to bring that many more people to the facility [with the presence of a sportsbook].” Instead, Williams says local gaming operators should consider lobbying “to introduce new online and mobile products, [which would allow them to] generate revenues and then try to drive those new customers to a physical location. The audience who bets online or through a mobile app isn’t necessarily interested in going to a casino or retail sportsbook. [Operators] can capture far more of the market [if they have an online and mobile options available].”
ADVERTISEMENTSCROLL TO CONTINUE READING
It’s important to note that even in states with online and mobile sports betting “there is a spectrum of how successful the roll-out can or will be.” States that fail to support an open and competitive marketplace, limit the locations where mobile bets can be placed (see: geo-fencing) or require in-person registration are going to generate less revenue. New Jersey - which has 20+ skins and is generating +/- 88% of its sports betting revenues through mobile applications - is considered the model to follow.
The one mistake New Jersey made was preventing bettors from wagering on collegiate teams located in the state. Williams says “it’s not better from an integrity perspective, it just forces those who want to bet on Seton Hall or Rutgers to drive to PA, bet with their local bookie or bet off-shore.” The rigidness of the legislation prevents state regulators from correcting the wrong.
As the U.S. sports betting industry matures, in-play betting will become more prominent. With that transition will come an increase in “transaction volume” and in the amounts wagered. Williams expects - based on international trends and the direction the world is heading - that “80% of all-bets will [eventually] be in-play.” How soon remains to be seen (though, a decade seems reasonable), with most companies currently focused on offering core products that their customers are familiar with. That's because “some of the platforms that the online or mobile products were built on were developed many years ago. They weren’t designed to handle the dynamic and time sensitive requirements of the U.S. market in 2020, which for a large operator means launching multiple sportsbooks in multiple states, keeping the product on the cutting edge of innovation (because there is stiff competition) and doing it without knowing [what is coming down the pike].”
Software and bandwidth concerns aside, Williams believes that the industry needs to invest in educating the public that in-play betting is a possibility for it to become more prominent. To that end, Sportradar is meeting with lawmakers and regulators across the country to ensure that they understand the entire anatomy of sports betting, including the potential of in-play (along with how data is used and integrity monitoring). “Even though there has been sports betting in Nevada for a while, most people don’t fully understand that they can bet during the game. Once that becomes part of the culture, in-game betting will take off and that is when teams and leagues will begin to achieve their goals related to driving engagement.” SBJ recently noted that online sports betting has yet to impact the NFL's television ratings.
Fan Marino: If sports betting is operational in 25+ states come early 2021, Williams indicated that last Sunday's Super Bowl would be the last without national commercials for gaming operators. “You are going to be hard pressed to find a CMO [of a multi-state operator] who wouldn’t be very interested in [a Super Bowl commercial]. Certainly there are companies with big budgets, that want to make some form of a splash. I don’t think it is crazy to think it could occur [next year].”

Robust Fantasy Database, March Madness Rights Make CBS Sports the Right Sports Betting Media Partner for William Hill

On February 10th, CBS Sports and William Hill announced a strategic partnership that will make the U.K. based bookmaker the “Official Sports Book and Wagering Data Provider across all CBS Sports platforms.” William Hill will also gain the exclusive rights to market sports betting products on CBS Sports’ digital channels in the deal. Initial integrations will be in place in time for next month’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The ‘full’ roll-out is expected to be completed by the start of 2020 NFL season.
Howie Long-Short: William Hill has been looking to grow their brand in the U.S. for some time (co. currently has a significant presence in NJ and NV and retail books in MS, WV and IN), so aligning with CBS Sports - whose digital channels draw over 80 million unique visitors/mo. (2nd amongst U.S. sports properties behind only ESPN) - seemingly meets that objective. CBS also controls valuable live rights (see: March Madness, NFL) and as respected sports gambling consultant Sara Slane explained “exposure and integration on a broadcast channel - or channels in the case of March Madness - that everyone is consuming, is highly appealing.”
From the CBS Sports perspective, there’s seemingly little downside in the deal. The company is guaranteed to take in some new revenue (for access to their audience and the sponsorship of digital assets) and William Hill has a large enough footprint - remember, the bookmaker has a market access agreement in place with Eldorado Resorts (which has since acquired Caesars) - that they could realistically realize the upside built into the partnership.
Specific terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the New York Times reported the incentive laden agreement “is aimed at getting CBS Sports users to download the William Hill betting app and put money into their betting accounts.” Slane says the wording within the story indicates there is limited financial outlay on William Hill’s part. “Operators are being very thoughtful about how they’re investing money [with so few states having gone live with sports betting]; particularly, as it relates to media and digital. An affiliate deal for deposits would be a smart approach for a [gaming entity] who wants to see a direct ROI on their investment.
Sports betting operators see the current ‘land-grab’ environment and are aligning with media companies (see: MGM/Yahoo, TSG/FOX Sports, Barstool Sports/Penn National) in an attempt to cultivate new users. But it’s fair to ask - as Alun Bowden (Eilers & Krejcik Gaming) did - why is [every gaming company] so keen to copy an expensive unproven model in a market where the price of failure is enormous and the potential for differentiation is massive?” It’s certainly hard to argue that the strategy, which varies across each of the partnerships referenced, works. DraftKings and FanDuel continue to dominate the U.S. market (i.e. not casino sportsbook operators + media companies) and Slane said that “while there were a couple of runs [made by gaming companies] at media partnerships in the U.K., Sky Betting & Gaming is the only one that has really been a success.”
If there’s a case to be made that the CBS Sports-William Hill deal will buck the trend, it should be made on the back of CBS Sports' robust database of fantasy sports players. As we’ve seen with DraftKings and FanDuel - who have both successfully converted DFS players to sports bettors - “there’s a huge overlap between fantasy gaming and sports betting.” Sports Handle EIC Brett Smiley estimated that “60% of those who participate in season-long fantasy and +/- 80% of those who play DFS have also placed a wager.”
Fan Marino: NBC and Sinclair are the last of the major U.S. sports media rights holders without a gaming partner. It’s reasonable to believe that both will ink agreements sooner than later if only because there are no shortage of operators looking to grow their market share and cash in on the perceived sports betting gold rush (in fact, Slane believes a second wave is coming) and to pass on a gaming partnership would be leaving money on the table. While it could be argued that in a market where bettors are not used to line-shopping (think: people are used to betting with a bookie or a single off-shore book here in the U.S.) there is a strong first mover advantage, Smiley believes it’s “a long game and that over time people will become exposed to more apps and more options” (i.e. potential new entrants to the market haven’t missed the boat). As we’ve previously noted, in the U.K. the average sports bettor has accounts with four different books.

Snappy Adventures: The Snappy Nativity

Hello, I am the Narrator. And I am here to bring you a wonderful story of giving, receiving and love. But it’s not a porno, that’s coming next year when the Best Boys reunite and give us their Christmas Spectacular.
Because it turns out that the one thing Fox News is right about is that a liberal arts degree will not get you a job worth a damn, I am here to tell you the story of Snappy, Delilah and their unhatched eggs as they headed home to the Everglades.
Our story takes us to Southern Florida just as Snappy, Delilah and the trailer of eggs get to the edge of the Everglades. They had been slowed down as they had both gotten diarrhoea thanks to Billy Ray Cyrus but had got to the swamp just as dusk fell.
Their journey hadn’t ended yet though as they needed to find a hole to put their eggs in so they can hatch safely.
Meanwhile
In a field hundreds of miles away, Gorey Craves is trying to get a lot of sheep into a truck. MKD and P1 are on quad bikes trying to get the unruly woolly monsters under control.
Gorey then gets his gun out.
Gorey: GET THESE SHEEP IN THE TRUCK NOW OR I WILL SHOOT YOU! SNAPPY AND DELILAH WILL HAVE A FEAST WHEN THEY GET BACK!
MKD: Woah woah we’re out here helping out for the goodness of our own heart.
Gorey: No you’re not! You’re helping out because you killed the janitor because he was stealing our faeces for his fetish farm while P1 is helping because he was peeking at his presents!
P1: *meekly* I wanted to see if I got a hatchimal.
Gorey: You were, not now, Steve is getting it now!
And then as P1 started to have a temper tantrum, an angel that looked like John Cena appeared in the sky. Wait we could afford John Cena for this? Then why am I getting paid £10 and a voucher for the local burger place?
John Cena: Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the swamps of Florida, the saviours of the world are being hatched.
P1: Wait, who’s saying this? I can’t see anyone.
Seriously, that joke? Even Squared Circle is bored of that.
MKD: What do you want us to do John Cena?
John Cena: Wouldn’t hurt for you to go there and welcome them into the world. Bring the sheep.
And so John Cena disappeared and the shepherds pledged to head to the swamps of Florida to see the hatched saviours of the world, even though there was still an arrest warrant for P1 thanks to the time he pissed into a microwave during a Best Buy Black Friday sale. P1 and Gorey got into the front of the truck while MKD had to get into the back with the sheep. This was fine though as MKD started to count the sheep out of boredom and well he fell asleep because the person who wrote this script is a hack.
While shepherds watched
Their flocks by night
On stolen broken quad bikes
The angel of Vince McMahon came down
And glory shone around
And glory shone around
Meanwhile
Snappy and Delilah were swimming through the swamp trying to find somewhere they could rest their head and hatch their eggs. Things were getting urgent as the eggs were starting to shake which Pokemon tells mean they are only a few steps away from hatching.
But every tree hotel and swamp hostel was full because of trendy hipsters renting them on AirBNB and despite Snappy’s protests, they were not allowed to simply eat the hipsters as the crocodiles were making a lot of money out of this gentrification.
Eventually, Snappy made it to a farm. The rooms there were full but there was room in their farm shed. So Snappy and Delilah decided to go in there, delicately placing their eggs in the manger.
Away in a manger
No crib for His eggs
The little crocodiles
Are just about to hatch
Meanwhile
In a penthouse suite in Miami, Tokes, Dan and Bahamas are relaxing while drinking very expensive champagne. So expensive that I’m told that if I touch it, Tokes will 86 me and dump my corpse in the Crocodile Union Christmas Party hamper.
Bahamas: Tokes, you may be a terrible person, but these private Christmas Eve tuxedo parties are the best.
Dan: Amen to that.
Tokes: Well as two great GMs who have the power to hand me title shots, I thought a little Christmas Party would be great. Anyway, about those title shots…
But before Dan and Bahamas could tell Tokes to fuck off, the great angel John Cena appeared.
John Cena: Hello wise men, I bring you great news of love and peace on earth.
Bahamas: That happened ages ago, Dan came back.
They high fived, which was highly inappriopiate in front of an angel.
John Cena: 12 saviours of the world are being hatched tonight in the Everglades and you must greet them.
Tokes: Seems legit.
John Cena: Also, I need you to get a few things for them.
Dan: This is starting to seem like a scam now.
John Cena: Bring the saviours of the world gold, frankincense and myrrh.
And so John Cena disappeared. The three wise men were pretty solid on the idea of gold, but they had no idea about frankincense and myrrh because no one knows what they are. Seriously, go ask the Reverend at a church service tomorrow what they are, I bet they don’t know. Instead of simply googling it and using Vacant’s Amazon Prime account to get the frankincense and myrrh, they found alternatives and headed to the swamps.
We three predictor of orient are,
Bearing gifts we head not so far
Street and highway, mud and swamp,
Following hatching eggs
Meanwhile
In the manger, the eggs were hatching. First was Bitey, who was a bit Bitey. Then there was Chompy because there’s a theme. Then there was Teeth, because of course. Fourth to come was Gus, because Delilah named that one. Fifth to hatch was Bone Breaker as he is being primed for a career in pro wrestling. Sixth was Gwazi because Snappy had agreed to a promotion tie-in with Busch Gardens for their new rollercoaster Iron Gwazi, coming Spring 2020. Seventh was Gorey due to a longstanding bet Snappy had lost, he really did think the Dolphins would win the Superbowl this year. The eight was Beatrice, again Delilah’s choice. 9th was Rapida, which is actually Snappy is Spanish. 10th was Croccy, as you do start to run out of ideas at number 10. 11th was Hero, sweetly named after his deceased friend. And 12th is Jesus, because we might as well be that sacrilegious.
And then the visitors came. First it was the shepherds who arrived, Gorey, P1 and MKD bringing all of their sheep into the shed. It was packed full of sheep but the new crocs were able to sort that out pretty quickly. Turns out Gus has an appetite.
MKD: LBH would be so proud of you Snappy for this.
MKD then weirdly tapped a vial strapped to his side.
MKD: In fact I think he is watching rather closely right now.
P1: Baby crocodiles really do sound like laser beams don’t they?
Gorey: OMG THESE ARE THE BEST THINGS EVER I’M THROWING YOU A BABY SHOWER AS SOON AS YOU GET BACK TO LLR HQ!
Then the three wise men arrived, though I think that’s a relative thing.
Tokes: Crocodile babies, I bring the gift of gold. Ok it’s a gold coloured chip that gets you a free spin at any casino in the country but it’s still good.
Bahamas: Crocodile babies, I bring the gift of frankincense. Well, I got you a San Marino gift bag which has grapes, olives and a pig. I wrote frankincense on the pig though.
Dan: Crocodile babies, I bring the gift of myrrh. Well, I brought a Dan action figure! This one is a collectible so don’t take it out of the packaging.
The crocodile babies immediately tore into the packaging with Croccy and Gwazi doing a tug of war with the figure.
But eventually they calmed down and the night fell silent, with all watching the beautiful baby crocodiles fall to sleep.
Snappy night, holey night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin (hah), Delilah and Child
Holy infants so angry and wild
Sleep in crocodile peace
Sleep in crocodile peace

Sports Betting Revenues Falling Short of States’ Expectations

Legalized sports betting has failed to generate the revenue expected in Rhode Island. The state initially budgeted for $23.5 million in gambling related revenues for the fiscal year ending in June 2019 (began in Nov. ’18). The target was lowered to $11.5 million in January, but R.I. lottery officials are reporting that the state has posted just 1.3% of that total ($150,000) to date. Governor Gina Raimondo attributed the shortfall to “a little bit [of a] later start than we thought”; wagering volume ($250 million anticipated vs. $813 million projected) and gambler performance (better than expected) have also forced the need for a rebalancing of the budget. While it’s all but assured that Rhode Island will fall short of January’s revamped projection, it should experience significant revenue growth in 2020; Raimondo signed a bill last week that will permit online sports betting within the state.
Howie Long-Short: The Patriots Super Bowl win contributed to a tough February for Rhode Island’s sportsbooks – the pair lost a combined $890,000 on $20.7 million in wagers during the month. They’re off to a better start in March, having raked in +/- $1 million over the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. The state is entitled to 51% of sports betting revenues (after expenses).
Rhode Island is certainly not a proxy for the country – it has just 2 licensed casinos – but “most of the states” that have passed legislation since PASPA was struck down have fallen short of projections. It’s certainly no coincidence that like Rhode Island, all but New Jersey (which out-earned Nevada for the 1st time in Jan.) failed to establish mobile/online as an option.
Rhode Island’s 2020 budget assumes sports betting will bring in $30.3 million in revenue, including $3 million in mobile fees. Democratic Senate President Dominick Ruggerio has acknowledged that the financial forecasts will need to be rebalanced (see: lowered) in the wake of fiscal 2019 results, but the nominal revenue Raimondo attributed to mobile – relative to the total income projected – makes me think they’re still getting bad “information” (or that they simply don’t understand the marketplace). New Jersey sportsbooks generated 80% of their January revenue from mobile and online platforms.
Once Twin Rivers begins taking online/mobile bets, business will pick up. It will become easier for residents of the state to place wagers and with Massachusetts yet to legalize sports betting, the Rhode Island licensee should pick up some action from residents of the neighboring state (via the William Hill app). For reference purposes, FanDuel claims 9% of its New Jersey business comes from those living in New York and another 4% from those based in Pennsylvania. The 2020 budget assumes mobile sports betting will be available next winter, but there’s a current push within the Assembly to have it in place by the start of the NFL season.
Rhode Island’s 2 casinos (Lincoln and Tiverton) are owned by Twin River Worldwide Holdings. On Friday, the company (which also owns the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Biloxi, MS) “added to its geographic base” closing on the purchase of Dover Downs Gaming & Entertainment. Shares of Twin River common stock subsequently began trading (at $29) on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol TRWH.
Fan Marino: 75% of those who placed bets (against the spread) on the Super Bowl at Rhode Island’s 2 brick and mortar casinos took the hometown Patriots; as a result, the pair lost $2.3 million on the game. It’s not atypical for a sportsbook to take a loss on a big game – like the Super Bowl – when the hometown team covers. Fans bet with their hearts and the action tends to skew “towards the geographically favored team.” The books don’t move the lines to reflect the heavy action though, because doing so would leave them susceptible to sharp money (going the other way) taking advantage of mispriced odds.

Frank Vincent died just as The Irishman started filming. Who could he have played in The Irishman?

The Irishman will act as a reunion for a lot of Scorsese's original muses. The last time Vincent was in a Scorsese movie was over 20 fuckin' year.
Sadly Vincent won't be one of them since he died last year. It got me thinking, if he was still alive who could he have played in The Irishman?
I made a little video collating my thoughts together on the matter if you're interested:

We may never know if Frank Vincent was in mind to have a role in the film, but if he did, who could he have played? A role as one of the film’s big three characters – Jimmy Hoffa, Frank Sheeran and Russell Buffalino, seems unlikely. A reading of the script was done around 2013 and it is thought the only actors at the table were Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, suggesting they were always going to play their characters. Given their pedigree, it only makes sense.
So who else is there then? A minor role as a relatively low-key character or a random mobster is possible, but would be a rather waste of the actor’s talent. Another gangster he could have played was Phil Testa, one of Bruno’s understudies and his eventual successor as boss of the Philadelphia crime family. Again it is likely to be quite a small role, but one that would suit him given Testa being known for having a stern and uncompromising presence.
So what do you think? Would you have liked to see Frank Vincent in The Irishman? If so who do you think he could have played?

D.C. Expected to Permit Sportsbooks within 4 Area Arenas, Stadiums

Mayor Muriel Bowser is expected to sign legislation that will permit 4 Washington D.C. arena/stadium operators to open “Las Vegas style” sportsbooks on their premises; Capital One Arena (Wizards, Capitals), Nationals Park (Nationals), Audi Field (D.C. United) and the St. Elizabeth’s East Entertainment and Sports Arena (Mystics, GoGo) are the venues that will be allowed to host sportsbooks (as will new RFK when built). The bill offers the arenas/stadiums some brick and mortar exclusivity, with the District’s other licensees unable to take bets within a 2-block radius of a designated facility, but it also gives the D.C. Lottery a “virtual monopoly” on mobile business; arena/stadium sportsbook operators will only able to take mobile bets from those on the premises. The city council’s decision last week to delay a vote that would have allowed the D.C. Lottery to negotiate with a preferred vendor (as opposed to going through bidding process), likely means that sports betting legalization isn’t becoming law in Washington “until summer at the earliest.”
Howie Long-Short: D.C. is willing to allow brick and mortar sportsbooks at their sporting venues because there are no licensed casinos within the jurisdiction. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to be the start of a trend. As Jill Dorson, Deputy Editor, SportsHandle told me “having read proposed legislation and/or talked with lawmakers in more than 10 states that will seriously consider sports betting in 2019, putting sportsbooks into stadiums has not come up. When D.C. first proposed this, it was a unique idea and remains so. That said, I have read that there is a chance that there will be a sportsbook if not in the Raiders new stadium, on the stadium property.”
While I had Jill on the line, I asked if D.C. was also going to be unique in licensing bars, restaurants and convenience stores and tried to find out why a state would issue licenses to small private businesses like them?
Jill: While I don’t believe that any of the six states that launched sports betting in 2018 are allowing for sports betting in bars, restaurants or convenience stores, many states proposing legislation in 2019 are considering putting kiosks into bars, restaurants, hotel lobbies, and convenience stores. In both Montana and North Dakota, sports-betting kiosks in food-and-beverage venues and corner stores are definitely part of the equation; and I have talked with legislators in several other states who would prefer not to have full-fledged casinos in their states, but would rather see sports betting online with “physical” locations being kiosks in non-traditional venues, like convenience stories or restaurants.
None of the 4 venues intend to disclose their plans (or lack thereof) until Bowser signs the bill into law, but I would bet that Capital One Arena and Nationals Park end up hosting sportsbooks; Caps/Wiz owner Ted Leonsis has long spoken about bringing sports betting to his venue and between the 2 buildings, more than 5 million fans walk through the doors annually.
Those lobbying on behalf of the arenas/stadiums are right to claim they’re being “incentivized to spend a lot of money on something that has been minimized.” The District acknowledges that 2/3 of sports betting revenue is going to come through mobile wagers and as mentioned above, the D.C. Lottery is going to keep nearly all those profits. It likely won’t make sense for all 4 prospective venues to open “Las Vegas style” brick and mortar sportsbooks without an equally viable mobile business.
League rules prevent teams/facilities from operating sportsbooks, so those that proceed are going to partner with an established gaming company. If Capital One Arena decides to move forward, the Washington Post says to keep an eye on DraftKings as a prospective partner; Leonsis’ VC firm Revolution Growth is invested in the company.
As for mobile, it remains TBD if the D.C. Lottery will go through a competitive bidding process or unilaterally award a sole source contract to Intralot (trades on The Athens Exchange under symbol INLOT), their existing provider.
Fan Marino: Speaking of the Wizards, NBC Sports Washington produced an alternative sports betting broadcast for a recent game against Milwaukee (they’ll do it 7 more times this season, next is Jan. 27 vs. San Antonio). Those watching at home saw live odds, game statistics and player statistics alongside the action and were given the chance to participate in a “Predict the Game” contest (think: prop bets) for $500 prize. Monumental SVP of Strategic Initiatives Zach Leonsis called it “the 1.0 version of where we’re ultimately going” (with regards to integrating real-time data/predictive gaming feeds into game broadcasts) and you won’t find an argument here; the future of sports broadcasting will be engagement driven.

95% of Money Wagered on Super Bowl Remains Offshore, Restrictions on Mobile to Blame

Sports betting may be legal in 8 states, but an American Gaming Association survey indicated that 95% of the expected $6 billion to be wagered on Super Bowl 53 (up from $4.76 billion last year) will be placed through unregulated or illegal channels. 8% of fans (1.8 million) gambling illegally on the game will place bets with their local bookies, the balance will give their business to off-shore online sportsbooks. Super Bowl bettors have been slow to migrate to a legal means of wagering, just 2% of those who bet on last year’s game illegally are expected to transition to a licensed gaming operator this time around.
Howie Long-Short: With 15% of the country offering legalized sports betting and the regulated gaming industry only expecting to covert 2% of fans from grey markets for the Big Game, it’s worth wondering why gamblers are foregoing the legal avenues available to them. VSIN CEO Brian Musburger explained to me that “most states that are currently operating prevent bettors from funding their mobile accounts without depositing cash at a brick and mortar casino (see: NV) and others – like Mississippi – only permit mobile gambling on the premises. Once bettors can fund mobile sports betting accounts with a credit card and place bets remotely, you’ll see that number explode; you’ll see a huge surge in deposits. As it currently stands, in many states it’s still easier for people to bet offshore than it is to do it in a regulated environment.”
What can the states do to convert those betting offshore into domestic sports bettors?
Brian: It’s on the states to be competitive [with pricing]. A good sports bettor is always going to seek the greatest potential edge. If the states overtax sports betting and regulated markets can’t be competitive with the illegal markets, the big money will remain in the gray areas. Smart Money looks for prices if the state taxes are too onerous that will only keep money offshore.
Nearly 1/10 Americans (22.7 million) will place a bet on Sunday’s game, but you won’t hear Jim Nance or Tony Romo (they’re on the call) reference the line (NE -2.5) or oveunder (56.5). That’s because with sports betting legal in just 16% of the country, CBS has opted to avoid the topic. That could change by the time Super Bowl 54 rolls around though as upwards of a dozen states could add sports betting legislation over the next 12 months. Fox has the broadcast rights to the 2020 game. I asked Brian if he would expect Murdoch and Co. to include gambling conversation and/or commercials during the game broadcast – if 40% of the country were to permit sports betting within their borders?
Brian: Well, after reading JohnWallStreet’s column from yesterday about Super Bowl advertising rates, Fox should be incentivized to take ads from casinos. But back to the first part of the question, the primary rights holders should probably stay away from sports betting; you don’t want to alienate your audience and there’s a lot of kids watching the Super Bowl that shouldn’t be inundated with sports betting talk. However, many of the people tuned into the game do have money on the line. Those individuals can use their second screen for sports betting information and I think they’ll find an outlet like VSIN is more informative and of far greater utility to them, than what Tony Romo (or Troy Aikman) will provide.
The NFL wants prop bets (wagers on an individual/team performance unrelated to the game’s outcome) “restricted – or even outlawed” deeming them too vulnerable to fixing/manipulation, and has asked congress to “allow professional and amateur sports organizations to identify which types of bets simply pose too significant a risk to the integrity of sports and to work with regulators not to authorize them.” Good luck with that. As Brian told me, “if there’s a marketplace for it, it will continue no matter what the NFL Commissioner says; and there really isn’t even a reason for the league to be concerned. The amount of money you can put down on a prop bet would never be enough to sway a professional athlete; most sports books place a low limit on props.”
Fan Marino: Most the money that has been bet on the game thus far has been sharp money. That’ll change by Sunday as casual bettors begin to place wagers on things like the coin toss and national anthem. As of Thursday evening, the money wagered in Las Vegas has been split between the Rams and Patriots.

Seminole Tribe of Florida (with an Assist from Disney) Protects Florida Gambling Monopoly

The Walt Disney Company spent $20 million in support of a ballot initiative that would give Florida voters the right to prevent the expansion of casino gambling within the state, a measure designed to protect their tourism interests and the state’s brand as a “family friendly” destination. Amendment 3 of the Florida Constitution passed on Tuesday evening, with more than 70% of the state’s voters backing the law that will require new casino projects to gain the support (60% must vote in favor) of the state-wide voting public prior to breaking ground; few (if any) projects are likely to meet the 60% benchmark. MGM Resorts International (seeks licensure in state), the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (both NFL teams are hoping to profit on sports betting) were among those that publicly opposed the measure; each of the 3 entities spent $500K on the proposed amendment’s “no” campaign.
Howie Long-Short: Disney (DIS) was invested in the amendment passing for its own selfish reasons, but there’s no bigger beneficiary to the “Voter Control of Gambling” amendment passing than the Seminole Tribe of Florida (spent $16 million on “yes” campaign). The Tribe dominates the Florida gaming landscape, operating in the state under a Federal gaming exemption afforded to Native Americans with little competition; the amendment’s passage ensures the moat remains around their business.
The long and costly battle for gaming company expansion into the state just became infinitely more difficult, but don’t expect casino operators to give up on Florida. Dan Alkins (Chairman of the committee opposing the ballot initiative) said should the measure pass “there’s going to be litigation just continuing on forever.” The state’s size/population, reputation as a tourism destination and abundance of retirees makes it a highly desirable locale for casinos to take up residence.
It’s worth pointing out the irony in the Miami Dolphins opposition of the amendment, while playing their home games at Hard Rock Stadium; a chain owned by the Seminole Tribe and the one that will pay the franchise $250 million over the next 18 years for naming rights.
Speaking of MGM Resorts International (MGM), the company is reportedly exploring a potential merger with Caesar’s Entertainment (CZR) to form a gaming behemoth (think: +/- 50% of all hotel rooms in Las Vegas and Atlantic City). While there’s no offer on the table (and it’s possible regulators could determine a merger would create “undue economic concentration), it’s known that “without a CEO, Caesar’s is in play” and that it’s CZR’s activist investors (own +/- 25%) driving the tie-up talk; a merger would allow the combined companies to eliminate redundant “overhead and marketing” expenditures. Wynn Resorts (WYNN) and the Genting Group (OTC: GEBHY) have also been names as companies that could have interest in a CZR (-25% YTD) take-over. With licenses in 13 states (49 casinos), the company is well positioned to benefit from wide-spread sports betting legalization.
Fan Marino: Howie mentioned Las Vegas and Atlantic City, so it seems like an opportune time to note that Eilers & Krejcik is projecting New Jersey sportsbooks will generate more sports betting revenue than those in the gambling mecca, as soon as 2021 ($442 million vs. $410 million). The boutique research firm (with a focus on the gaming industry) supported their thesis by pointing out NJ gamblers can make “sports betting transactions” on credit card (as opposed to being forced to make a deposit in a casino), that the state’s sportsbooks have created a highly competitive online/mobile market (think: pricing/promotions) and that state’s licensees have had “very high rates of black market recapture.”
